[oops. I put this in the wrong place.. correcting]

haha - yeah. Not that I have had the experience, but I bet that you would find it to be different working at a software company not in the valley. For example, I'm sure the place I'm at is waaaaaaay laid back compared to where you are at, from a dev perspective. I think the midwest is pretty cush for developers. the salaries are pretty good, the cost of living is insanely low, and expectations aren't much.

I miss start-ups, or at least companies that care about what they are making / aren't corporate behemoths. We are only a 150 people company, but you can really tell that the bloat has set in. folks I know who have been around for a while say it got really noticeable around 100. Start-ups are rare-er here. I'm often tempted, but because I don't have a ton of liquid asset, I generally tend to do the fiscally safe thing. It sucks, but at 40 now, I really have to be paying attention. Besides, most of the start-ups here are pretty lame, "business" related: document processing, ai ad placement, etc. still soulless. haha.

I used to be in the professional development thing. I still am making an effort to go network, but.. ugh. it just seems like there's nowhere to go. Advancement is just taking the same position at another company and the 10% pay bump.

I hear ya on the bubble, though. I really think I am too. Most days, I feel like a glorified business analyst.. (who makes about 3x what a business analyst would! lol) Not sure what I'll do when the bubble bursts.. lets hope it keeps on floating a while!
